Tools For Creation

There are so many wonderful options when it comes to the tools an artist can use to create images. There are some that solely use paints and brushes, others that use nothing but charcoal and their own bodies, and still others that need nothing more than a working laptop and a great wifi connection. Whatever is used, the outcome is still amazing with enough will and determination.

Personally, my favorite mediums are felt tip pens on normal sketchbook paper and digital media such as Adobe Illustrator. I am lucky enough to be able to enjoy a discount on the Adobe Suite because I am currently a student enrolled full time. I have also been so fortunate as to take a digital art class this past semester, and to learn the basics and more in both Illustrator and Photoshop. I plan on becoming a licensed Graphic Designer at the end of my four years of university work.

I love learning about all of the different ways in which artists express themselves. I would love it of everyone who read this article would comment their favorite mediums of art and what their favorite ways of application are! But for now, I’ll share most of the art supplies that I use on a normal basis and how I put them into good uses.

Starting with the non-digital aspect of art, I personally love drawing. Charcoal, pencil, felt tip pens, markers, you name it, and I absolutely love using them. Most of the time when I sit down for a spell to work in my sketchbooks, I will pick up a felt tip pen first, its my favorite look and I love the application. The permanence of the ink also does not bother me as much as I have heard that it bothers other artists. When I am in the mood to sketch though, I usually grab my wide variety of pencils because I love to ad detail and depth to the subject I’m studying. I have also just started to enjoy using alcohol based markers. I was a bit nervous about purchasing them because of the price, but I have to say that they are definitely worth the price.

Another bit of physical art that I love to use is watercolor, although I am definitely still learning. I have used all sorts of varieties of this medium, such as the normal watercolor palettes and tubed paint that we are all familiar with, and then some more unusual versions such as watercolor pencils and markers. All of these versions I have tried have been super interesting to work with, but I have to say that my favorite is still the traditional palette of hard colors.

Going into the more digital side of art, I love using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I have created several pieces of art so far including a self portrait. Because of the field of work that I am currently in school for, it does make quite a bit of sense that this would be my favorite method of creation. I have already found that I do have a particular style when I am designing, and it tends to be a bit more graphic, blockish, colorful, and vibrant, which I guess can speak volumes about my personality!

Being homeschooled all my life, I had the unique opportunity in college to learn about all different types of art from my peers as well that I had never done before. I have learned about paints and pigments that I have never used, I have learned how to create pottery with my own two hands and nothing more. Being an artist definitely has its ups and downs, but I know for a fact that this is the right career for me, I mean, how else could I try out new art supplies every chance I get without looking like a hoarder? Now I can just say “Oh, it’s OK, I’m just an artist!”

Don’t forget to comment down below what some of your favorite art supplies are, and I would love to see if some of them are even out of the ordinary!
